Reptile Pets - Snakes

Australian Snakes
For other people's safety, you might want to put your exotic pet in a faintly solitary region, far from children who may be better off not mingling with them. Keep the exotic pet faint but still viewable. Some exotic pets don't precisely accept the idea of being fawned over by strangers. It might even take more time and considerable exercise for it to cheery up to you, much more with other people.

Snakes Make Good Pets Too

Snakes are least considered as household pets. It is due, in part, to their notorious image as portrayed in films and written in books. Many people still think of snakes as those creatures able to squeeze you to death or kill you with a single venomous bite. This is not at all true. One only need to differentiate between venomous and those fairly safe snakes.

REMEMBER, snakes should always be cradled with great care because sudden movements by the one carrying it can result to a defensive mode.

For individuals who are adventurous, snakes are the perfect pets for them. Snakes are not typical pet choices. However, caring for them is just like caring for any other pet. Sometimes they are even more useful than other pets we keep. They can help you out in your battle with mice. They do not need much cleaning since they do not smell nor create too much mess in the house. Feeding them is never a problem especially if they are still small.

Choosing the kind of snake you would like to own depends on several factors: budget or the amount of money you are willing to shell out to own the animal, the amount you will allocate for its housing, and the features of the snake. For the last factor, you can be sure to get any kind of snake you fancy as long as they are not venomous. Snakes have different colors and vary in size. For those of you really contemplating on getting one as a pet, you may opt to hang around the local pet shop for a while so you may familiarize yourself first with the snake you want to purchase.

For a beginner snake owner, Garter Snakes are most appropriate for you. They are tiny and not very pricey. But the good thing about them is their long lifespan. You can literally grow old together because they can live for more than a decade (about 12 years or more). These are kind of snakes children can cradle and pet due to their even-tempered nature. Tthey are naturally climbers so it is good to take note of this fact when you are building their cage or terrarium.

Another kind of snake that is relatively safe to own as a pet is the Snow Corn Snake. They are colorful and easy on the eyes. These snakes attract children with their extraordinary color. One good thing about the Snow Corn Snake is their ability to tolerate cradling and petting by individuals. It is a bit longer than the Garter Snake since it can grow to about five feet whereas the latter may only reach four feet. Same terrarium specifications as with Garter Snakes apply.

On the other hand, there are snakes better left to those well-trained to handle them. Snakes like Python (Ball Python or Royal Python) should be handled by herpetologists. They are constrictors or snakes which constrict their prey to submission. Royal Pythons can be found in Africa measuring from three to five feet. They can live up to three decades.

Always keep in mind that exotic pets such as snakes and other venomous animals are bound by laws. Before bringing home any of these animals be sure to check with your local government to ensure that you are not breaking any law regarding exotic animals. If you break any law unintentionally you still need to face the consequences and fines can be very steep for these kinds of animals.
